Honoring Leadership and Service
The Michigan Medicine Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize the exceptional achievements, dedication, and service of former U-M medical and doctoral students, as well as residents, fellows, and faculty members.
A stunning, sleek lead crystal piece, dramatic in presence and elegant in design, the Michigan Medicine Alumni Society Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service in their careers. Held every fall, the prestigious Michigan Medicine Alumni Society Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony honors Medical School alumni who embody the institution's commitment to excellence and drive to effect change throughout the world.
Awards bestowed include the following:
- Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award
This award honors U-M Medical School alumni* who have typified the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the university by their personal and professional accomplishments. Recipients are recognized for their distinguished achievements, dedication to their field, and significant contributions in the science and art of medicine. - Distinguished Alumnus Service Award
This award honors U-M Medical School alumni* who exemplify the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the university and their profession through their outstanding service to medicine, patient care, MMAS, or the health sciences. - Distinguished Alumnus Humanitarian Service Award
This award honors U-M Medical School alumni* who illustrate the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the university and their profession through their humanitarian service to the welfare of humankind. - Distinguished Alumnus Basic Science Research Award
This Michigan Medicine Alumni Society award honors Michigan alumni (M.D., Resident, Fellow, Ph.D. or faculty member) who exemplify the Michigan tradition of excellence and have brought credit to the University by their personal accomplishment and professional achievement and recognized significant contributions in medical research and discovery. - Early Distinguished Career Achievement Award
This award honors U-M Medical School alumni* who epitomize the Michigan tradition of excellence through exemplary achievement in medical education, research or patient care in the initial 20 years of their career
Nominations are accepted during the current year to be awarded in the following year. To nominate a potential awardee, please:
- Secure two letters of recommendation
- Include the candidate's curriculum vitae
- Upload these documents here, along with the completed nomination form

Awards are celebrated during the annual Medical School Reunion weekend, October 12-14, 2023.
*For the purposes of these awards, "alumni" signifies former medical and doctoral students, as well as residents, fellows, and faculty members.
